The words “movie prop” are short for “movie property” and refers to any object used by actors in a movie to help enhance a scene. Some props even come to symbolize the movie itself, like the leg lamp from A Christmas Story, the ruby red slippers from The Wizard of Oz, and the lightsaber from Star Wars.

Earlier this year Algoma Mop Manufacturers (the mop manufacturing company owned by East Shore Industries) was contacted by a Prop Master who works for 20th Century Fox. She asked if Algoma Mop could provide some custom made mops for a movie that was going into production. That movie was JOY.

JOY is the story of a family across four generations and the woman, Joy Mangano, one of America’s most successful entrepreneurs who invents the Miracle Mop and rises to become founder and matriarch of a powerful family business dynasty.

During the production of JOY, Algoma Mop not only provided the Prop Master with over 500 mops in various stages of production but also large bales of yarn and metal-fabricated, hand-operated, mop looping work stations. Algoma Mop contracted with Olson Fabrication of Algoma to create parts used in the production of these machines. Some scrap yarn pieces and cotton dust bunnies were also sent to get the full effect of a mop manufacturing floor.   The Prop Master said all of the mop products seen in the movie are those which came from Algoma Mop Manufacturers. What an exciting project to be part of!

JOY is a major film release featuring Jennifer Lawrence, as Joy Mangano, Bradley Cooper, and Robert De Niro. The producer is David O. Russell, known for Silver Linings Playbook (2012), American Hustle (2013), and Three Kings (1999).

JOY opened in theaters on Christmas Day 2015.
